New India Has Made Its Priority Clear: ‘Delivery’ Over ‘Divinity’

Recently, despite my busy schedule, at the insistence of several friends, I decided to watch The Family Man Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video. Although what I expected from the show was pure entertainment, yet the show made me ponder deeper philosophical assertions related to the show at large and not merely about its storyline.

Recovering from Covid-19: A story of Endless Hope

The covid 19 pandemic, as they say, did not break the system. In reality, it exposed the already broken system. And this system also included the lifestyle of individuals, apart from the economy and polity of the state. A lot has been written and discussed about economy and polity but what has got very little or almost no attention is how covid 19 brought in the forefront our clandestine attitude towards things that should have mattered the most, but was neglected for our blind run towards money and success. And that thing is an individual’s health, fitness and wellbeing. As someone who has recovered from covid 19 after being covid positive for almost 6 weeks along with my family, I can state with full authority that this catastrophe opened my eyes and changed my perspective towards life and lifestyle.

There are two visions when we get struck to a dead end of the cliff, metaphorically. One is to see this as a hopeless end and the other is to see this as endless hope. The choice is ours. And I ministered to see this as the later. Although I was a visitor to the gym, yoga classes and exercised on irregular intervals and avoided junk food, yet all this was adhocism in nature and did lacked coherence and consistency. However, when I got struck with this lethal virus at a time when even thought of the vaccine was nothing less than a wishful thinking, the only remedy I was suggested was a complete overhaul of my lifestyle and an adoption of incremental changes for the good. And therefore, I started doing yoga and meditation daily and did not miss any exercise session that I planned for myself at home. From tea I switched to healthier alternatives like Kadha and golden milk and titled more towards preventive healthcare measures. Fruits, dry fruits and raw vegetables became an indispensable part of my diet and refined oil gave its way to kachi ghani and coconut oil. Tinned and packaged food got replaced by freshly homemade cooked food.

All these events also led me to think about how ignorant we were about our own ancient culture that had remedies even for ills of the twenty-first century. Thanks to the concerted and concrete efforts of the Modi government, our Yoga became a global currency once again and the entire mankind benefited from this gift of Hinduism to humanity. All that was practiced for ages by our ancestors was, unfortunately, discarded by us in the name of “modernity”. Be it yoga, desi spices, herbs, medicines or ayurveda, everything was looked upon by us with disdain. Western consumerism cut us off from our roots and made us a degraded copy of them. But in one stroke everything has changed. After covid 19, the world has not just realised but also appreciated the soft power of India, be it yoga, ayurveda or even the Indian lifestyle. Namaste became the universal symbol of greeting and many prominent leaders were seen greeting each in this manner. I am very much contained to see my young daughters copying me and my wife doing yoga and exercise daily. This is getting into their minds in this young age and would perhaps become an intrinsic part of their life in the near future. Habits formed young are difficult to amend. And I wish such habits remain not just with them but for all of us forever. Let there be happiness and health for everyone. Sarve bhavantu Sukhina..

The left cannot be left unchecked to run its agenda

The rise of the Modi government in 2014 led to a regime change in India as it was not just one party winning the election and another losing it. It was a paradigm shift in the ideological framework of Indian politics. For the first time, the ‘left eco-system’ in India was left with no parents, they had no state sponsorship or patronage, nor did they have any power broker left who would help them in gaining different kinds of favors from the establishment. It would be wrong to believe that the left ecosystem wasn’t the de facto ecosystem of Lutyens Delhi only because the left had not been in power for a very long time. Actually the Congress and left had enjoyed a very harmonious and quid pro quo type relationship between them. It was a mutually beneficial alliance under which the Congress patronized the left in all the state institutions be it cultural, social, or academic while the left ensured that the legitimacy of the Congress party, despite its numerous crimes and corruptions, go unchallenged and always remain “acceptable”. Students were brainwashed to believe that everything good in India was because of the Congress and the first family of the Congress and that BJP/RSS were the villains of the Indian story! When Modi won in 2014, fortunately, it made sure that Institutions that had always been raised up in the Congress ideology now shun this propaganda and get back to the nationalist ideology.

Because of this abrupt change, the left started to create ruckus on the University campuses. The Institutions like Parliament and Supreme Court were attempted to be used against the Modi government. However, after they failed to obtain perfect results from it, what they started to do was to manipulate the people on the ground by organizing fake protests. The left ecosystem thrives on the fears of the ordinary people and what they do is to create a mountain out of mole and then project it as if it is the doomsday.

What we are witnessing on the borders of Delhi is nothing but a concerted effort by the left ecosystem as well as the opposition parties to delegitimize the Modi government which has recently brought three revolutionary laws in the Parliament that will change the face of Indian agriculture and bring prosperity and development to the farming community of India. The changes that these laws will bring in the lives of ordinary farmers of India will have a long-term effect as they would now have more opportunities to sell their produce, go for contract farming, which would be extremely beneficial for them and would also create an environment where no middle man would be able to exploit them. The middleman-opposition party nexus is afraid that such laws would put them out of business as they would now not be able to use the farmers for their personal gains, nor be able to obtain their cuts from the hard-earned money of the farmers. Therefore, in the name of “protest by the farmers”, they are trying to take Delhi hostage. One remembers very well what happened last year when the Modi government brought citizenship amendment laws. Despite repeated assurance by the Government of India, including Prime Minister Modi himself, the left tried to create such an environment as if the entire country is against these laws and that these laws would throw Muslims out of the country and render them without any citizenship. The left tried to turn the Shaheen Bagh into a place of ‘so-called resistance’. However this was not a place of resistance, but a place of sedition, a place of anti-Hindu bigotry where provocative and seditious slogans were raised. And now they are again trying to create such a ruckus. However, the people of India know their designs very well and therefore despite more than 50% of the population practicing farming in direct or indirect form, only a minuscule minority of so-called farmers are protesting, and just like Shaheen Bagh, here too some provocative and seditious slogans are being raised like “Khalistan Zindabad.”

In a democracy, there is always scope for deliberation, debates, and discussions but there are proper channels and methods for it. Taking the city hostage and that too the National Capital, reflects poorly of the intentions as well as the mechanism used by the protesters. Let us not forget that in a parliamentary democracy, Parliament is the highest law-making body that reflects the sentiment of the nation. It signifies the idea and essence of India and therefore when the Parliament has already passed these laws and the majority of the farmers are in support of it, organizing a protest and choking the hearts of Delhi doesn’t look like a real protest. What it looks like is an attempt by the opposition parties to keep their cadre base intact as they have lost all support of the people as well as their own cadre. The innocent farmers are being misled by them. The Modi government which is a firm believer in constitutional democracy and rule of law has invited the protesters to have a discussion with the government to find the middle ground. But any negotiation is successful only when both the parties agree to lower down the rhetoric and have some kind of compromise. But what is happening here is that the government is ready for a compromise but the protestors want 3 laws to be abandoned in toto which is not only impossible but is also against the spirit of parliamentary democracy where Parliament is the supreme law-making body and any bill which is duly passed in the Parliament becomes law after getting assent from the President of India. It would be beneficial for everyone including the protestors that they realize that they are being used as a tool by the opposition parties. The protesters as well as the government need to adopt a flexible attitude so that a long solution can be brought about. Therefore it is high time that the farmer and the government and all the stakeholders find a solution setting aside any ego or agenda and adopt a flexible approach.

Abraham Accord: The Real Deal of the Century!

Otto Von Bismarck had once said, “Politics is the art of the possible, the attainable – the art of the next best.” This essentially means that anything is possible in the domain of politics. As they say, you do not have permanent friends or permanent enemies but only permanent interests in the field of politics.

Politics 2.0 is the Politics of PR and Social Media

Politics 2.0 is the politics of PR and Social Media

COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the entire world in unimaginable ways. Our conventional wisdom is being challenged by it and demanding an entirely new horizon of thinking. The governing principle of society and state, the politics, too is set to undergo major transformation due to COVID related implications. Scholars have argued that the post-corona politics or the Politics 2.0 will have elements of conventional politics like debates around caste, religion, welfarism, capitalism, socialism, liberalism etc. but what will add new flavour to it will be the spatial dimension of this politics 2.0. We had conventionally associated politics with massive rallies, big dharnas and large gathering of people to support their leader, party, and ideology. However, all this has become extremely dangerous and difficult in the contemporary world where social distancing has become sine qua non to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Therefore, more and more politics will shift to the digital space from physical space. In this context, the decision by the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), to hold digital rallies is welcome move and refreshing development in Indian politics, which has the potential to transform it completely. This politics requires a closer scrutiny along with the role of Public Relations and Social Media.

Public Relations and the making of New Politics

It wouldn’t be a hyperbole to say that the role of public relations is as old as politics itself. In the ancient Greek, the art of public speaking became the most important pillar of politics. The balanced use of emotions, facts and rhetoric made a person a fine politician. All great leaders have been great orators, be it Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi to Narendra Modi in our contemporary times. It is the speech that connected them to the people as they spoke the minds of the common man, whose voice was previously unheard and in the that leader they found someone who could convey what they had always thought and wanted. However, in the present times, Public Relations include much more than speeches. It included the role of media, social media, technology, marketing of ideas and the leader and dynamics of communication.Perception in politics is a key driver to take a successful election campaign home. Contextually, PR has emerged as a vital tool that ensures the idea is professed in the manner it should be.PR driven and technology backed political campaigns have buzzed the world over the past few years. To cater the needs of the politicians, several PR firms have therefore mushroomed up in the world that help them in reaching out to the public and creating a brand out of the leader.

Earlier PR was considered as a ‘bad’ world in politics. It was believed that politics should remain raw where politicians seek vote on different issues via rallies, conferences etc. Leader should not be ‘marketed’ like some commercial product, it was believed. However, with the changing times, this philosophy became redundant and obsolete. The new idea is that the greater the public relations or PR, the greater is the chances of acceptability and winnability of the leader and there are several examples. Using PR doesn’t mean that the leader is not competent enough to win. It simply means that the leader wants to reach out to new set of voters through new set of ideas and techniques. Ultimately it is the quality of the leader that has the final say. For example, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, both the parties BJP and Congress used PR to promote their leaders and philosophy. But it was the quality of Narendra Modi ji which was more acceptable to the people than his opponent Rahul Gandhi ji. PR can definitely help a good idea liked by more people but certainly not the one that is not even liked by a considerable number of people. By making catchy electoral ads, content marketing, mobile advertising the PR agencies make the leader’s presence felt in different place in various forms.

Role of Social Media in contemporary politics

One idea that has brought noticeable change in the style of politics is the use of social media. Social media has democratised the public debate that was earlier confined to a set of intellectuals, media personalities and opinion builders. Now, through the help of social media, anyone can raise his/her voice and make it heard to those required. In the Indian context, two politicians were quick to realise the potential of social media- Shashi Tharoor of the Congress and then Gujrat CM Narendra Modi of the BJP. In fact, it was the social media that helped Modiji’s rise both within the partyand among the common people. At a time when he was completely boycotted by the mainstream media, Modiji utilised Twitter and facebook to convey his message of good governance and development for all. His popularity in social media made him a force to reckon with. In a way it was a ‘revolution from below’, that made Modi’s rise inevitable. It was also the same time in 2013 when thentwo senior Union Ministers — Manish Tewari (Information and Broadcasting) and Kapil Sibal (Information Technology and Telecom) — disagreed on the report that stated that social media could influence 160 Lok Sabha seats in the elections of 2014. The result of their ignorance was the historic drubbing of the Congress party and several reports indicated the absence or negligible presence of the party and its scion Rahul Gandhi in social media that was responsible for this defeat. Indian youth had spent considerable time and got highly influenced by the social media campaigns of the BJP.

Even in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s dominant presence in social media and its well functional IT cell helped it in reaching out to the voters. It was led by the PM Modi himself who initiated the unique campaign of ‘Mai BhiChaukidaar’ by putting ‘Chaukidaar’ as a prefix in order to counter the negative campaign of accusation of corruption by Rahul Gandhi on social media by calling ‘ChaukidaarChor Hai’. However, Rahul Gandhi’s campaign boomeranged and BJP won the elections with even greater number of seats than its previous tally of 2014. Experts attributed this success to PM Modi’s fine election campaign, his PR and the fantastic use of social media beside other factors like his welfare schemes and a corruption free regime. Social media helped BJP reach out to those set of voters who were either undecided or were negatively influenced by a certain section of print and electronic media. They could easily find the realities in social media of what was told to them by the mainstream media.

Politics 2.0 will be more about PR and Social Media

As we move towards normalcy in post-pandemic era, our politics will be in a new avatar. It will be practised and contested more and more on digital platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. Therefore, digital presence may become necessary but not a sufficient criterion for getting success in politics. New ideas will have to be brought in, new remedies have to be innovated and new connectivity has to be developed in the digital world. This is where PR would play a major role. Campaigns like ‘Chai Pe Charcha’, ‘AbkiBaar, Modi Sarkar, ‘Selfie With Daughter’, Virtual rallies will have to be encouraged so that safety of the people is not compromised while taking up the welfarian cause of the people. Elections will be more about which leader and which ideology connects with the masses in more unique ways. As internet reaches more and more people, their opinion will be shaped more by social media that mainstream media. It is also imperative that social media companies be kept under check so that there remains a level playing field for all the players and that the personal data of the people is not mis utilised by them to influence their political choices.

New Education Policy 2020- An idea whose time had come

The power of education needs no elaboration as it is self-explanatory. It can construct or destroy an entire generation, thereby an entire country. Therefore, it is imperative that right programs and policies on education are prepared and implemented by the government. It is also required that these policies get updated from time to time so that new developments in society and technology do not make the education system out of sync. Education itself is such a huge sector that ‘one size fits for all’ does not suits it and there are several dimensions to it. It is in this context that New Education Policy, 2020 has been brought by the Modi Government.
